---------------
Marcus J. Jauregui joined the Kinder HSPVA vocal faculty in 2021 after serving five years as Director of Choirs and Fine Arts Department Chair at Pershing Middle School in Houston ISD. In the fall of 2016, the Pershing Choral Department consisted of one director, five choirs, and 105 singers. By the fall of 2020, the program grew to two directors, 225 voices, and seven ensembles. Under his direction, the Treble Chorale received an invitation to perform for the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2021. This was the first choir to receive a TMEA invitation since Pershing’s opening in 1928 and the first middle school choir in Houston ISD to receive this invitation since 1983. Before moving to Houston, Mr. Jauregui taught one year of elementary school, four years of middle school, and two years of high school in North Texas.
Mr. Jauregui holds a Bachelor of Music in music education from Centenary College of Louisiana and a Master of Arts in music education from Texas Woman’s University where his thesis focused on the mentoring practices of Texas choral directors. As a member of the Centenary College Choir and Centenary Camerata, Mr. Jauregui performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the White House for President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. He also toured internationally, performing throughout Australia, England, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Wales. Singing as both a tenor and countertenor, highlights include Mozart’s Requiem, The Magic Flute, and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. Mr. Jauregui has also performed in and music directed numerous musicals including the regional premiere of Xanadu, Hairspray, Cinderella, Grease, The Music Man, Curtains, Urinetown and the role of Michael in Jonathan Larson’s Tick, Tick… Boom! At PVA, Mr. Jauregui has served as vocal director for Hairspray, Mamma Mia, The Wiz, The Prom, and After Midnight.
In the summer of 2022, Mr. Jauregui received funding from HSPVA Friends to attend Boston Conservatory’s annual vocal pedagogy workshop, studying under Kevin Wilson and Patty Thom. As a choral, classical, and musical theatre vocal technician, Mr. Jauregui is thrilled to begin his third year at PVA and his fifteenth year of teaching young artists to navigate healthy singing technique in a variety of musical styles.
In his few moments of free time, Mr. Jauregui serves as Director of Traditional Worship at Bellaire United Methodist Church, standing in the shoes where retired HSPVA vocal faculty member Dr. Gary Patterson once stood and where former HSPVA Principal Norma Lowder played organ for over 35 years. All roads seem to lead back to PVA!
